Ranch Highlight: First Light Farms
First Light Farms was started in the early 2000’s, when commodity driven agriculture was dominating the meat industry, and there were only a handful of small, purpose driven agriculture brands. First Light was born with the promise to produce and provide their customers with delicious meat, raised right, by people who truly care. Now, 20 years later, First Light is still holding true to that promise. Their network of nearly 200 farmers is passionate about their land and the animals they manage, providing hope that sustainable farming is alive and well.
New Zealand is made up of complex climate systems, with varying terrain across the North and South Islands. Unlike the United States, with rolling plains and pastures blanketing the nation, farms in New Zealand are comparable to their climate; diverse. With First Lights network stretching from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island, each farmer is dealing with different climates, soils, and topography. Regenerative agriculture encourages each of these farmers, who work and know their land best, to build robust and enduring ecosystems regardless of their differing environments.
While these farmers differ in location and environment, they farm for the same common reason. They do it because it’s the right thing to do, for themselves, their families, and for those who will inherit what is left when they leave. To First Light, regenerative agriculture is farming that protects and enhances ‘our collective future.’ First Light is 100% convinced working with nature is the best way to create the most delicious and nutritious protein, and is committed to maintaining that for generations to come.
